We provide free support to grassroots organisations through our flagship initiative, Steps to Sustainability.

What is Steps to Sustainability?

Steps to Sustainability (S2S) is a capacity-building programme with a difference - it’s all about 'learning by doing'. We provide free consultancy support to grassroots organisations led by and for marginalised communities, whilst coaching and upskilling them. This enables organisations to make incredible strides in their organisational development. Each organisation works in a 1-to-1, relational way with a dedicated consultant from Civil Society Consulting to identify five priority areas. Over the subsequent three to six months, we work together to co-produce up to five outputs (e.g. an impact report, a new website, or strong organisational policies). The grassroots organisation leads this whole process - they know what they need and our support is bespoke to them.

Though support is delivered 1-to-1, organisations are part of a cohort of 5-10 organisations. Members of the same cohort build strong supportive relationships through group workshops and biweekly catch-ups - and meet other former and current S2S organisations through regular coffee clubs.

Why Steps to Sustainability?

Grassroots organisations in marginalised communities are immensely valuable. By ‘grassroots’ organisations, we mean charities, CICs, CIOs, community groups which are led by the people and community they’re seeking to support. They are: agile, deeply motivated, trusted by their communities and extremely knowledgeable of their needs.

Despite their immense value, many grassroots organisations achieve what they achieve against the odds. If properly supported, they have even greater potential. It’s tough out there for all civil society organisations, but particularly grassroots organisations in marginalised/disadvantaged communities:

  • Within the social sector, people and processes are biassed towards larger, more established organisations. Institutions that control the resources often lack understanding of the context of life in marginalised and disadvantaged communities - and their processes are not accessible. This is because institutions continue to lack diversity within them.

  • In organisations led by and for marginalised and disadvantaged communities, leaders and staff are themselves experiencing structural disadvantages, which means less capacity and less access to resources.

CSC has developed its Steps to Sustainability (S2S) programme to support, develop, catalyse and empower grassroots organisations, so that they can survive and thrive, leveraging positive social impact in the communities that they know and love. S2S was developed during the pandemic (formerly known as Steps to Recovery). Since coming ‘out of the frying pan and into the fire’, the support is needed more than ever.
